How to setup your computer to  connect to SDNP server using Dial up Networking

 I.  Introduction

This document explains the procedure for setting up PCs that run Windows 95 and Windows 98 so that, using Windows 95/98's Dial-up Networking features, they can connect to the Internet via Dial up Networking Connection to SDNP. These instructions will not work for Macintosh or other operating system. If you have another operating system, you may have to purchase or download a third-party software solution.

Keep in mind that it is impossible for this document to account for all possible configurations of Windows 95/98. Not all of the windows and settings described here may be applicable to your copy of Windows 95/98. If you have any Internet account running properly to other Internet Service Provider please jump to step V.

II.  Verifying that a modem is installed and is operating correctly

PLEASE NOTE: Close all windows and applications before going any further.

In order to go any further, you will need a working modem correctly installed in your machine. The following steps determine whether or not you do; however, if you are sure that your modem is installed and working properly, you may skip to the next section.

1.      Click the Start button.

2.      Click Settings.

3.      Click Control Panel.

4.      Double-click Modems. If you are presented with a window that asks you to begin modem installation, you do not have a modem installed. In this case, please click Cancel and proceed to install one according to its manufacturer's recommendations. Once that is completed, you should follow these instructions again from the beginning.

5.      In the Modems Properties window, click the Diagnostics tab.

6.      Click on the port (COM1, COM2, etc.) to which your modem is connected.

7.      Click the More Info button

After a short wait, you should see a new window with all the information about your modem displayed.

If you do not see such a window, then your modem is not installed correctly and you cannot proceed. Please reinstall the modem and/or its drivers according to its manufacturer's recommendations. Once that is completed, you should follow these instructions again from the beginning.

8.      Click OK.

9.      Click OK again.

III.   Verifying that dial-up networking is installed

The steps in this section verify that Windows 95/98's Dial-up Adapter is installed.

1.      On the desktop, Double-click on the My Computer Icon

2.      If there is a folder in the My Computer window named Dial-up Networking, then Dial-up Networking is installed and you can skip to Section V, "Configuring Dial-up networking." If there is no such folder, then proceed to the following section.

IV.  Installing dial-up networking

1.      Double-click the My Computer icon.

2.      Double-click the Control Panel icon.

3.      In the Control Panel window, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

4.      In the Add Remove Program Properties window, click the Windows Setup tab.Double-click Communications.

5.      In the Communications window, click once in the checkbox beside Dial-up Networking. It should now show a checkmark in it..

6.      Click OK

7.      In the Add Remove Program Properties window, click OK again. Windows will begin installing the Dial-up Networking software now. If you do not have Windows 95/98 copied on hard drive, you will be prompted to insert CD. If you are asked to restart your computer, choose NO. In some cases, you will not be prompted for any form of CD or diskette.

V.  Configuring dial-up networking

1.      Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop.

2.      Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon.

3.      If you are automatically prompted to make a new connection, click Next If you only see the Dial-Up Networking window with one or more icons in it, double-click on the Make New Connection icon.

4.      In the Make a New Connection screen, at the Type a name... dialog, type "SDNP" (without the quotation marks).

5.      Click Next.

6.      In Telephone Number dialog, enter 9133662.

7.      Click Next

8.      Click Finish.

9.      In the Dial Up Networking window, right-click on the SDNP icon.

10.  Click on Properties in the menu that appears.

11.  In the window labeled Server Types, click on the tab at the top or (on some Windows 95/98 systems) click on the button at the bottom.

12.  MAKE SURE that only the boxes beside Enable Software Compression and TCP/IP are checked. Uncheck all others.

13.  In the Dial Up Networking Window:

                                                         i.            Right-click on the SDNP icon.

                                                       ii.            Choose Create Shortcut.  

                                                      iii.            At the error message that says that the "shortcut cannot be created here…," click Yes

14.  Close all open windows by clicking the X  button in their upper right-hand corner.

VI.  Going online

1.      Double-click the shortcut of SDNP icon on the desktop.

2.      In the Connect to: screen, enter your username and your password. If you don't want to have to re-enter your password each time you go online, check the Save Password checkbox.

PLEASE NOTE: Be sure your username is entered in lowercase form. Verify that your password is entered correctly, keeping in mind that UNIX, the environment in which these actions are processed, is case-sensitive.

3.      Click Connect. If an error message appears that refers to password rejection or disconnection of your session, which may be caused by an incorrect password or login.

4.      Shortly, you should see a call duration or a connected to SDNP window. This means you have successfully connected to the Internet, and you are ready to run a client program, such as an e-mail program or Web browser. This window should minimize automatically. If not, you may minimize it manually. Once connected, you should see a "flashing computer" icon in the Windows Task bar (near the clock in the lower right corner of your screen). You can click on this icon to check your online status and to disconnect.

5.      If you do not see the aforementioned window and/or get an error message stating that something is not configured properly, go back through these instructions to make sure you haven't missed anything or done something incorrectly.

6.      When you are finished using the Internet, and you wish to disconnect and to free the telephone line, double click the flashing computer icon in the Windows Task bar, then click the Disconnect button in the Connection to SDNP window.

VII.  Using Internet Explorer

Windows 95/98 comes with a Web browser called Microsoft Internet Explorer. To use it, click  the  icon  on the desktop(if its on the desktop) if not follow these steps:

1.      Click the Start button on the task bar.

2.      Click Run.

3.      Type "iexplore" (without the quotation marks) and press Enter. This will launch Internet Explorer.

If this was successful, then you may follow the next steps to create a shortcut to your desktop.

4.      Click on the Start button.

5.      Click on Find.

6.      Click on files or folders.

7.      In the "named" field, type "iexplore" (without the quotation marks). In the "Look in" field, make sure "c:" is displayed. If it is not, click on the pull down menu to locate "c:".

8.      Make sure there is a check mark in the box beside "Include subfolders."

9.      Click Find Now.

10.  You will see several files named "iexplore." Right-click on the iexplore icon where "Application" is listed in the Type Column (to the right).

11.  Click on Create Shortcut.

When the error message appears, saying "windows cannot create a shortcut…," click Yes. Windows will place a shortcut on the desktop.

Once the program launches, you will probably be taken to Microsoft's homepage. To go to another page, click in the Address field near the top of the window and type the URL to which you wish to go (for instance, "www.sdnbd.org"). You may also click on a link to go to a new page (a link is indicated when the mouse pointer turns into a pointing finger). To go back to a previous page, click the Back button. To go forward again after using the Back button, click the Forward button.

 X.  Configuring Netscape Communicator (version 4.xx)  to read your e-mail from SDNP

Netscape Communicator's mail reader can be used to read your e-mail from SDNP.  The following steps explain how to configure Netscape Communicator 4.xx's mail client to retrieve your mail from SDNP so that you can read it in a "point and click" environment.

Please note that these instructions do not work for any version of Netscape Navigator.

1.      Make sure that you are connected to the Internet and that Netscape is running.

2.      On Netscape's menu bar, click Edit.

3.      Click Preferences.

4.      Double-click on Mail & Groups.

5.      Click on Identity.

6.      In the Your Name field, type your real full name.

7.      In the e-mail address field, type "guest@sdnbd.org" (without the quotation marks) being sure to replace "guest" with your Login ID.

8.      In the Reply to Address field, type guest@sdnbd.org

9.      Click on Mail Server.

10.  In the Mail Server User Name field, type your Login ID (e.g., "guest").

11.  In the Outgoing Mail Server field, type "mail.sdnbd.org" (without the quotation marks).

12.  In the Incoming Mail Server field, type "mail.sdnbd.org" (without the quotation marks).

13.  Uncheck the box beside the field Leave messages on server…

14.  Note: Steps 10 through 13 may vary depending on your version of Communicator. If your version is more recent, follow steps 16 through 20 instead.

15.  In the Incoming Mail Servers section click on Add.

16.  On the General tab type "mail.sdnbd.org" (without the quotation marks) in the Server Name field.

17.  Make sure that POP3 Server is selected beside Server Type.

18.  Enter your SDNP login id in the User Name field.

19.  On the POP tab make sure there is NO checkmark beside Leave messages on server.

XI.  Configuring Eudora  to read your e-mail from SDNP

Eudora  mail reader can be used to read your e-mail from SDNP.  The following steps explain how to configure Eudora  mail client to retrieve your mail from SDNP so that you can read it in a "point and click" environment.

Please note that these instructions  work for Eudora 4.x and above.

1.      Make sure that you are connected to the Internet and that Eudora is running.

2.      On Eudora's menu bar, click Tools

3.      Click Options.

4.      In the Your Name field, type your real full name.

5.      In the return address field, type "guest@sdnbd.org" (without the quotation marks) being sure to replace "guest" with your Login ID

6.      In the Mail Server(incoming), type "mail.sdnbd.org" (without the quotation marks).

7.      In the login name, type your Login ID (e.g., "guest").

8.      In the smtp server (Outgoing Mail Server field), type "mail.sdnbd.org" (without the quotation marks).

9. In the same option bar click on Sending Mail and uncheck Immediate send and check send on check.
